Used For:

  1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD):

    • Relieves symptoms like heartburn and prevents acid damage to the esophagus.
  2. Erosive Esophagitis:

    • Heals and prevents damage to the esophagus caused by stomach acid.
  3. Peptic Ulcers:

    • Treats ulcers in the stomach or upper part of the small intestine, often combined with antibiotics if caused by H. pylori.
  4. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome:

    • Manages conditions involving excessive acid production.
  5. Prevention of Stomach Issues:

    • Protects the stomach lining in patients taking NSAIDs or other medications that may cause irritation.

Dosage:

  • Adults:
    • GERD or esophagitis: 20–40 mg once daily for 4–8 weeks.
    • Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Higher doses as directed by a doctor.
  • Children: Dosage depends on weight and age; consult a pediatrician.

Take pantoprazole 30–60 minutes before meals, preferably in the morning.

Precautions:

  2. Long-Term Use Risks:

    • May cause bone loss, fractures, or deficiencies in calcium, magnesium, or vitamin B12.
  3. Interactions:

    • May reduce the effectiveness of certain drugs, such as clopidogrel.
    • Inform your doctor if you’re taking methotrexate, digoxin, or antifungal medications.
  4. Underlying Conditions:

    • Rule out gastric cancer before long-term use, as symptoms may mask the condition.
