Used For:

Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic medication used to treat several mental health conditions, including:

• Schizophrenia: Helps reduce hallucinations, delusions, and other symptoms.
• Bipolar Disorder: Effective in managing manic and mixed episodes. It can also be used for maintenance therapy to prevent relapses.
• Treatment-Resistant Depression: Often used in combination with antidepressants.

It works by balancing neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin, to improve mood, thought processes, and behavior.

• Drowsiness or sedation
• Weight gain
• Increased appetite
• Dizziness or lightheadedness
• Dry mouth
• Constipation

Less common but serious side effects:

• Metabolic Changes: Elevated blood sugar, cholesterol, or triglycerides.
• Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS): Muscle stiffness, tremors, or restlessness.
• Orthostatic Hypotension: Drop in blood pressure when standing, leading to dizziness or fainting.
• Tardive Dyskinesia: Involuntary muscle movements, which may be irreversible.
• Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but potentially fatal reaction causing fever, muscle stiffness, and altered mental status.

• Elderly Patients: Not recommended for dementia-related psychosis due to increased risk of stroke or death.
