Used For:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Esomeprazole helps relieve symptoms of GERD, such as heartburn and acid regurgitation, by reducing acid production.
- Stomach Ulcers: It aids in the healing of gastric and duodenal ulcers, often used in combination with antibiotics to eradicate Helicobacter pylori infection.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: This is a rare condition involving excessive gastric acid production, and esomeprazole is used to manage it.
- Prevention of Ulcers: It may be prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers in patients taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) long-term.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: These may include headache, nausea, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and flatulence.
- Serious Side Effects: Rarely, esomeprazole can lead to kidney problems, low magnesium levels (which can cause muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, or seizures), and Clostridium difficile infection in the intestines.
