Used For:

  • Gastrointestinal Infections: Primarily used for infections like bacterial diarrhea and enteritis caused by organisms such as Giardia lamblia and Escherichia coli.
  • Cholera: Sometimes used to treat cholera infections due to its efficacy against Vibrio cholerae.
  • Giardiasis: Effective against Giardia infections in the intestines.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: Include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, and a bitter taste in the mouth.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rarely, it may cause severe allergic reactions, liver toxicity, and peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage).

Precaution:

  • Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor (MAOI): Furazolidone has mild MAOI activity, so it can interact with certain foods and medications, potentially causing dangerous blood pressure elevations (known as a hypertensive crisis).
  • Avoid Tyramine-Rich Foods: Foods like aged cheese, wine, and fermented products should be avoided during treatment to prevent blood pressure spikes.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Furazolidone is typically avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to limited safety data.
  • Drug Interactions: Avoid combining with other MAOIs, antidepressants, or stimulants, as it can increase the risk of severe interactions.
