Used For:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Norfloxacin is commonly prescribed for UTIs, including bladder and kidney infections.
  • Gastrointestinal Infections: It can be used to treat bacterial infections in the digestive system, such as traveler’s diarrhea.
  • Prostatitis: Norfloxacin is sometimes used for bacterial prostatitis, an infection of the prostate gland.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: These include nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and abdominal pain.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rare but severe side effects include tendon rupture (particularly in older adults), nerve damage, seizures, severe allergic reactions, and QT interval prolongation (affecting heart rhythm).

Precaution:

  • Tendon Issues: Norfloxacin can increase the risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, especially in older adults and those using corticosteroids.
  • Nervous System Effects: It may cause dizziness, so caution is advised when driving or operating heavy machinery.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Norfloxacin is generally avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless deemed necessary by a healthcare provider.
  • Drug Interactions: It can interact with antacids, multivitamins, and other drugs that contain calcium, magnesium, or iron, reducing its effectiveness. Avoid taking these within two hours of norfloxacin.
