Used For:

  • Breast Cancer Treatment: Tamoxifen is commonly prescribed for hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, both in early and advanced stages, by blocking estrogen’s effect on breast tissue.
  • Breast Cancer Prevention: It may also be used in high-risk individuals to reduce the risk of developing breast cancer.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: These include hot flashes, vaginal discharge, irregular menstrual periods, and nausea.
  • Serious Side Effects: Tamoxifen can increase the risk of blood clots, stroke, and, rarely, uterine cancer. It may also cause vision changes or liver toxicity.

Precaution:

  • Risk of Blood Clots: Patients with a history of clotting disorders should use tamoxifen cautiously, as it can increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism.
  • Regular Monitoring: Routine pelvic exams, liver function tests, and eye exams are often recommended during treatment due to the potential for serious side effects.
  • Pregnancy and Fertility: Tamoxifen is not recommended during pregnancy, as it may harm the fetus. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during and after treatment.
