Manufactured By: Procter and Gamble Pharmaceuticals
Used For:
-
Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs):
- Nitrofurantoin is commonly prescribed for the treatment of uncomplicated lower UTIs, such as cystitis (bladder infection), caused by susceptible bacteria like Escherichia coli (E. coli).
-
Prophylaxis for UTIs:
- It may also be used to prevent recurrent UTIs in some individuals, especially in those who have frequent infections.
-
Pre-surgical UTI Prophylaxis:
- In certain cases, it may be given before surgery to prevent urinary tract infections.
Side Effects:
-
Common Side Effects:
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Loss of appetite
- Headache
- Diarrhea or mild stomach upset
-
Serious Side Effects:
- Lung issues: Nitrofurantoin can cause pulmonary toxicity, which may present as difficulty breathing, cough, or chest pain. This is more common with long-term use or in elderly patients.
- Hepatotoxicity: Liver damage, which may cause yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, or abdominal pain.
- Peripheral neuropathy: Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, especially in those with pre-existing kidney or nerve problems.
- Blood disorders: It may cause anemia, low white blood cell count, or other blood-related issues, leading to fatigue, weakness, or an increased risk of infection.
- Allergic reactions: Severe reactions such as rash, itching, or difficulty breathing.
-
Long-Term Use:
- With prolonged use (especially in elderly individuals or those with kidney problems), the risk of serious side effects like lung or liver toxicity increases. Therefore, the use of nitrofurantoin should be carefully monitored.
Precautions:
-
Kidney Function:
- Nitrofurantoin should not be used in individuals with severe kidney impairment (creatinine clearance < 60 mL/min), as it may not be effective or safe in these cases. It is contraindicated in patients with a significantly reduced kidney function because it can accumulate in the body and cause side effects.
-
Pregnancy:
- Nitrofurantoin is generally considered safe in pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters. However, it is contraindicated during late pregnancy (around the 38th week) because of the risk of hemolytic anemia in the newborn.
-
Liver or Lung Disease:
- If you have a history of lung or liver problems, nitrofurantoin should be used with caution due to the risk of pulmonary and liver toxicity.
-
G6PD Deficiency:
- People with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency should avoid nitrofurantoin, as it may cause hemolytic anemia (destruction of red blood cells).
-
Allergic Reactions:
- If any signs of an allergic reaction occur (e.g., rash, difficulty breathing, swelling), seek medical attention immediately.
