Used For

  • Travelers' Diarrhea: Rifaximin is effective in treating diarrhea caused by non-invasive strains of Escherichia coli.
  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome with Diarrhea (IBS-D): It may help reduce symptoms of IBS-D, particularly diarrhea.
  • Hepatic Encephalopathy: Used to decrease the risk of recurrence of hepatic encephalopathy, a condition caused by liver dysfunction that leads to a buildup of toxins in the brain.
  • Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO): Sometimes prescribed to treat SIBO, a condition where excess bacteria grow in the small intestine.

Rifaximin works by inhibiting bacterial RNA synthesis, thereby preventing bacteria from multiplying. Its broad-spectrum activity helps in targeting various gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Abdominal pain

Less common but serious side effects may include:

  • Allergic Reactions: Symptoms such as rash, itching, or swelling.
  • C. difficile Infection: Prolonged use of antibiotics can lead to an overgrowth of Clostridium difficile in the gut, causing severe diarrhea and colitis.
