Used For:

• Psoriasis: Effective for severe cases, including plaque psoriasis and pustular psoriasis.
• Other Severe Skin Disorders: May be prescribed for conditions like keratosis and other disorders involving skin thickening.

Side Effects:

• Common Side Effects: These may include dry skin, lips, and eyes; hair loss; brittle nails; and increased sensitivity to sunlight.
• Serious Side Effects: Rare but possible effects include liver toxicity, high cholesterol and triglycerides, bone and joint pain, and severe birth defects if taken during pregnancy.

Precautions:

• Pregnancy and Birth Control: Acitretin is highly teratogenic and should not be used by women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant within 3 years of stopping the medication. Two forms of birth control are recommended during treatment and for at least 3 years afterward.
• Liver Function and Lipid Monitoring: Regular monitoring of liver enzymes and lipid levels is required due to potential toxicity.
• Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can convert acitretin into etretinate, which remains in the body longer and increases teratogenic risk.
• Sun Sensitivity: Limit sun exposure, as acitretin increases sensitivity to UV light.
