Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and nerve pain medication that is used for:

- Seizure control: It is used as an adjunctive therapy for partial seizures in adults and children aged 3 years and older.
- Fibromyalgia: Helps in managing widespread pain and tenderness associated with fibromyalgia.
- Restless legs syndrome (RLS): Gabapentin is sometimes used off-label to alleviate the discomfort associated with RLS.
- Anxiety (off-label use): In some cases, it is prescribed off-label for anxiety disorders.
Gabapentin works by affecting the transmission of nerve signals in the brain, helping to control seizures and relieve nerve pain.

Less common but serious side effects may include:

- Allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, or throat; hives; or difficulty breathing.

- Breathing problems: Particularly when used with other central nervous system depressants like opioids, gabapentin can slow breathing.
- Movement disorders: Uncontrolled shaking or jerky movements.
- Memory problems: In some cases, gabapentin may impair short-term memory or cognitive function.
Precautions:
- Kidney disease: Gabapentin is excreted by the kidneys, so people with kidney issues may require a dosage adjustment.
- Suicidal thoughts: Like many anticonvulsants, gabapentin may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior in some people. Close monitoring is recommended.
- Alcohol or CNS depressants: Avoid alcohol and other central nervous system depressants while taking gabapentin, as it may increase drowsiness, dizziness, or slow breathing.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Gabapentin should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary. It can pass into breast milk, so consult a doctor if you are breastfeeding.
- Driving or using machinery: Gabapentin can cause drowsiness and dizziness, so avoid activities requiring mental alertness until you know how it affects you.
