Used For:

  1. Respiratory Tract Infections:
    • Bronchitis
    • Pneumonia
    • Sinusitis
    • Pharyngitis
    • Tonsillitis
  2. Skin Infections:
    • Clarithromycin can treat bacterial skin infections, such as cellulitis or impetigo.
  3. Helicobacter pylori Infections:
    • Used in combination with other medications (like proton pump inhibitors and other antibiotics) to eradicate H. pylori and treat peptic ulcers.
  4. Ear Infections:
    • Otitis media, a middle ear infection, can also be treated with clarithromycin.
  5. Mycobacterial Infections:
    • It is used to treat infections caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC), often seen in people with weakened immune systems.

Side Effects:

Clarithromycin can cause various side effects, ranging from mild to severe.

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Stomach pain or discomfort
    • Altered taste (metallic or bitter taste)
    • Headache
    • Indigestion

  • Serious Side Effects:

    • Liver Toxicity: Clarithromycin may cause liver problems, especially in those with pre-existing liver conditions. Symptoms include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or severe stomach pain.
    • Heart Issues: In rare cases, it can cause abnormal heart rhythms, particularly in those with a history of heart conditions or those taking medications that affect the heart's electrical activity.
    • Severe Diarrhea: Prolonged or severe diarrhea can occur due to a serious condition called Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
    • Allergic Reactions: Symptoms such as rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or difficulty breathing indicate an allergic reaction and require immediate medical attention.
    • Hearing Loss: Rarely, reversible hearing loss can occur, especially at high doses.

Precautions:

  1. Liver or Kidney Disease: If you have a history of liver or kidney problems, dose adjustments may be necessary. Clarithromycin may exacerbate existing liver conditions, so liver function should be monitored during treatment.

  2. Heart Conditions: Patients with a history of arrhythmia or heart disease should be cautious when using clarithromycin, as it can prolong the QT interval, increasing the risk of arrhythmias.

  3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Clarithromycin should only be used during pregnancy if absolutely necessary, as there are potential risks to the fetus. It passes into breast milk, so consult your doctor before using it if you are breastfeeding.

  4. Drug Interactions: Clarithromycin can interact with many medications, including:

    • Statins (e.g., simvastatin, lovastatin): May increase the risk of muscle damage.
    • Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin): Increases the risk of bleeding.
    • Heart medications (e.g., amiodarone): Increases the risk of arrhythmias.
    • Other antibiotics or drugs affecting liver enzymes.

  5. Gastrointestinal Issues: If you experience severe or persistent diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your healthcare provider, as this may be a sign of a more serious infection.
