Used For:

Tamoxifen is a medication primarily used in the treatment and prevention of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. It works as an estrogen receptor modulator and is commonly used in the following situations:

  1. Treatment of Breast Cancer:

    • Adjuvant Therapy: It is often prescribed after surgery (adjuvant therapy) to reduce the risk of cancer recurrence in patients with early-stage hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.
    • Metastatic Breast Cancer: Tamoxifen is also used to treat advanced breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body.
  2. Prevention of Breast Cancer:

    • Tamoxifen can be used in women at high risk of developing breast cancer to lower their risk of the disease.

Side Effects:

Tamoxifen can have various side effects, some of which may be serious. Common and serious side effects include:

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Hot flashes
    • Vaginal discharge or dryness
    • Nausea
    • Fatigue
    • Mood swings or depression
    • Changes in menstrual cycle (in premenopausal women)
  • Serious Side Effects:

    • Blood Clots: Increased risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism.
    • Endometrial Cancer: Higher risk of uterine cancer; women should report any unusual vaginal bleeding.
    • Stroke: Increased risk of stroke, particularly in older women.
    • Liver Problems: Liver dysfunction may occur; monitor liver function tests.

Precautions:

  1. Medical History: Inform your doctor about your medical history, especially if you have a history of blood clots, stroke, or liver disease.

  2. Regular Monitoring: Regular follow-up appointments are important to monitor for any side effects, especially those related to blood clots and endometrial health.

  3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Tamoxifen should not be used during pregnancy as it can harm the fetus. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should use effective contraception. It is also not recommended for breastfeeding.

  4. Drug Interactions: Tamoxifen may interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants and medications that affect liver enzymes. Always inform your healthcare provider of all medications you are taking.
