Naproxen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation. It works by inhibiting the production of prostaglandins, substances in the body that cause inflammation, pain, and fever. It is commonly used for:

  1. Pain Relief: Used for mild to moderate pain, such as headaches, toothaches, or muscle aches.
  2. Arthritis: Effective in treating symptoms of osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and juvenile arthritis.
  3. Menstrual Cramps (Dysmenorrhea): Commonly used to relieve menstrual pain.
  4. Gout: Helps reduce pain and inflammation during acute gout attacks.
  5. Tendonitis and Bursitis: Relieves inflammation of tendons and bursae.
  6. Fever Reduction: Used to lower fever in various conditions.

Side Effects:

Common and serious side effects of naproxen include:

  • Common side effects:

    • Stomach pain or discomfort
    • Nausea
    • Heartburn or indigestion
    • Dizziness
    • Drowsiness
    • Headaches
  • Serious side effects:

    • Gastrointestinal bleeding: NSAIDs like naproxen can cause stomach ulcers, bleeding, or perforation, especially with long-term use.
    • Heart problems: Increased risk of heart attack or stroke with prolonged use, especially in people with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
    • Kidney damage: Long-term use can impair kidney function, leading to kidney damage or failure.
    • Liver damage: Rare but serious liver issues, such as liver failure or hepatitis, can occur.
    • Allergic reactions: Skin rashes, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling (angioedema) in rare cases.
    • High blood pressure: Prolonged use can lead to or worsen hypertension.
    • Fluid retention: Can cause swelling in the extremities (edema).

Precautions:

  1. Gastrointestinal Risk: Naproxen should be taken with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach irritation or ulcers. People with a history of peptic ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding should avoid or use it cautiously.

  2. Heart and Circulatory Conditions: Naproxen can increase the risk of cardiovascular problems, including heart attacks or strokes, especially with long-term or high-dose use. People with heart disease, high blood pressure, or those who recently had heart surgery (like a bypass) should avoid its use or consult a doctor before use.

  3. Kidney and Liver Function: Naproxen may impair kidney or liver function, particularly with long-term use. Regular monitoring of kidney and liver function is recommended for people on prolonged treatment.

  4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Naproxen should be avoided during the third trimester of pregnancy due to the risk of harm to the unborn baby. It is generally not recommended during breastfeeding unless specifically advised by a doctor.

  5. Asthma: People with asthma may be at higher risk of experiencing allergic reactions or bronchospasm when using naproxen.

  6. Drug Interactions: Naproxen can interact with other medications such as blood thinners (warfarin), corticosteroids, other NSAIDs, diuretics, and certain blood pressure medications, increasing the risk of side effects.

  7. Alcohol Use: Avoid excessive alcohol consumption while using naproxen, as it can increase the risk of stomach bleeding.

  8. Short-Term Use: For minor aches and pains, it is recommended to use naproxen for the shortest time possible to reduce the risk of side effects.
