Used For:

Ciprofloxacin HCL is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the class of drugs known as fluoroquinolones. It is used to treat various bacterial infections, including:

  1. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)
  2. Respiratory Tract Infections (such as bronchitis, pneumonia)
  3. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections
  4. Bone and Joint Infections
  5. Gastrointestinal Infections (e.g., traveler’s diarrhea)
  6. Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) (e.g., gonorrhea)
  7. Certain types of prostatitis
  8. Anthrax exposure

Side Effects:

Common and serious side effects of ciprofloxacin include:

  • Common side effects:

    • Tendon damage or rupture (especially in older adults)

Precautions:

  1. Tendon Risk: Ciprofloxacin can cause tendon damage, particularly in the Achilles tendon. This risk is higher in people over 60, those on corticosteroids, or those with organ transplants.

  2. Nerve Damage: It may lead to nerve damage, resulting in numbness, tingling, or weakness. Discontinue the medication if these symptoms occur.

  3. Myasthenia Gravis: Ciprofloxacin may exacerbate muscle weakness in individuals with myasthenia gravis.

  4. Sun Sensitivity: The drug can increase sensitivity to sunlight, making you more prone to sunburn. Limit exposure to the sun and use sunscreen.

  5. Heart Conditions: Ciprofloxacin can prolong the QT interval, which can cause abnormal heart rhythms, especially in individuals with heart conditions.

  6. Kidney and Liver Function: Dosage adjustments may be necessary in people with kidney or liver problems.

  7. Drug Interactions: Avoid taking it with dairy products, antacids, or supplements that contain calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron, as they can reduce its effectiveness.

  8. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Ciprofloxacin should generally be avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless prescribed by a healthcare
