While generally effective, ciprofloxacin may cause side effects, including:

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
  • Central Nervous System Effects: Dizziness, headache, or, in rare cases, seizures.

Precautions:

  • Consult a Healthcare Provider: Always inform your doctor about any history of kidney disease, seizures, or tendon problems before starting ciprofloxacin.
  • Medication Interactions: Ciprofloxacin can interact with other medications (e.g., antacids, sucralfate, iron supplements), which can affect its absorption. It is advised to take ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after these medications.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids while on this medication to help prevent crystalluria (crystals in the urine).
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of ciprofloxacin during pregnancy is not well established.
  • Not for Viral Infections: Ciprofloxacin is ineffective against viral infections (e.g., colds, flu) and should not be used for these conditions.
