Used For

  • Bacterial Infections: Ciprofloxacin is effective against various infections, including:
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
    • Respiratory tract infections
    • Gastrointestinal infections (e.g., traveler’s diarrhea)
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
    • Bone and joint infections
    • Certain sexually transmitted infections (e.g., gonorrhea)

Side Effects

While ciprofloxacin is generally effective, it may cause side effects, including:

  • Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, diarrhea, abdominal pain, or vomiting.
  • Central Nervous System Effects: Dizziness, headache, and, in some cases, confusion or seizures.
  • Tendon Rupture: Increased risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.
  • Allergic Reactions: Skin rash, itching, or more severe reactions like anaphylaxis (rare).
  • Photosensitivity: Increased sensitivity to sunlight, which can lead to sunburn.
  • Liver Toxicity: Rarely, it can cause liver damage.

Precautions

  • Consult a Healthcare Provider: Always inform your healthcare provider if you have a history of kidney disease, seizures, or tendon problems before starting ciprofloxacin.
  • Medication Interactions: Ciprofloxacin can interact with other medications (e.g., antacids, sucralfate, iron supplements), which can affect its absorption. It is advised to take ciprofloxacin at least 2 hours before or 6 hours after taking these medications.
  • Hydration: Drink plenty of fluids while on this medication to help prevent crystalluria (crystals in the urine).
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the safety of ciprofloxacin during pregnancy is not well established.
  • Not for Viral Infections: Ciprofloxacin is ineffective against viral infections (e.g., colds, flu) and should not be used for these conditions.
