Product Description
Product Name: Mynoftil Tablets
Product Form: Tablets
Pack Size: 40's
Manufactured By: Genome Pharmaceuticals
Used For:
- Organ Transplantation: Primarily prescribed to kidney, heart, and liver transplant recipients to prevent acute rejection of the transplanted organ.
- Autoimmune Disorders: Sometimes used to treat conditions such as lupus nephritis and rheumatoid arthritis, where immune suppression is beneficial.
Mycophenolate mofetil is a prodrug that is converted in the body to mycophenolic acid. It selectively inhibits an enzyme called inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), which is essential for the proliferation of lymphocytes (white blood cells). By inhibiting this enzyme, MMF reduces the immune response and lymphocyte proliferation, which helps prevent organ rejection.
Side Effects:
While effective, mycophenolate mofetil can cause several side effects, including:
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain are common.
- Increased Risk of Infections: Due to its immunosuppressive effects, there is a higher risk of bacterial, viral, and fungal infections.
- Bone Marrow Suppression: Can lead to decreased levels of red blood cells (anemia), white blood cells (leukopenia), or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
- Rash or Skin Reactions: Some patients may develop skin rashes or experience allergic reactions.
- Liver Function Alterations: Liver enzyme levels may increase, requiring regular monitoring.
Precautions:
- Consult a Doctor: Before starting MMF, especially if you have a history of infections, liver disease, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- Monitoring: Regular blood tests are essential to monitor blood cell counts and liver function, especially during the initial treatment phase.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, and herbal products you are taking, as MMF can interact with other drugs.
- Avoiding Pregnancy: Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during treatment, as MMF can cause fetal harm.
