Used For:

  • Chronic respiratory disorders involving excessive mucus, such as COPD, bronchitis, and cystic fibrosis.
  • Acts as a mucolytic, helping to break down and thin thick mucus to ease expulsion.
  • Treatment for acetaminophen (paracetamol) overdose to prevent liver damage when prescribed.

 

Side Effects:

  • Common:
    • Nausea or vomiting.
    • Abdominal discomfort.
    • Headache.
  • Rare:
    • Skin rash or itching.
    • Difficulty breathing (bronchospasm).

 

Precautions:

  • Not suitable for individuals with peptic ulcers or hypersensitivity to acetylcysteine.
