Used For:

Moxifo 400 mg is prescribed for:

  1. Respiratory Tract Infections:
    • Community-acquired pneumonia
    • Acute bacterial sinusitis
    • Exacerbations of chronic bronchitis
  2. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Complicated bacterial infections of the skin.
  3. Intra-Abdominal Infections: Complicated bacterial infections in the abdomen, such as abscesses.

Mechanism of Action:

Moxifloxacin works by inhibiting the enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication and repair. This prevents bacterial growth and leads to the death of the bacteria.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain

More serious side effects may include:

  • Tendon Rupture: Increased risk, especially in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.
  • QT Prolongation: May cause abnormal heart rhythms, which could lead to serious cardiac events.
  • Peripheral Neuropathy: Nerve damage causing pain, numbness, or tingling.
  • Liver Problems: Jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, or liver damage.
  • Severe Allergic Reactions: Rash, swelling, difficulty breathing, or anaphylaxis.

Precautions:

  1. Tendon Damage: Avoid strenuous exercise, as fluoroquinolones can increase the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture. Stop taking the medication if you experience tendon pain or swelling.
  2. Heart Conditions: Patients with a history of QT prolongation or other heart rhythm disorders should use this drug cautiously, and heart monitoring may be required.
  3. Liver Function: Patients with liver issues should have liver enzymes monitored while on the drug.
  4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Moxifloxacin is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult a healthcare provider before use.
  5. Drug Interactions: Moxifloxacin can interact with antacids, supplements containing magnesium or aluminum, and other medications that affect heart rhythm. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you are taking.
