Used For:

  1. Fungal Infections:
    • Vaginal yeast infections (Candidiasis).
    • Oral thrush (Oropharyngeal candidiasis).
    • Esophageal candidiasis.
    • Systemic fungal infections (Candidemia and Candidiasis in blood/organs).
  2. Cryptococcal Meningitis:
    • Fungal infection in the brain and spinal cord, especially in immunocompromised patients.
  3. Prophylaxis:
    • Prevention of fungal infections in high-risk patients (e.g., those with HIV/AIDS, undergoing chemotherapy, or organ transplant recipients).

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:
    • Headache.
    • Nausea and vomiting.
    • Stomach pain.
    • Diarrhea.
    • Dizziness.
    • Skin rash.
  • Rare but Serious Side Effects:
    • Liver Toxicity:
      • Symptoms: Jaundice (yellowing of skin/eyes), dark urine, fatigue.
    • QT Prolongation (Heart Rhythm Issue):
      • Can cause irregular heartbeats.
    • Severe Skin Reactions:
      • Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (rare, life-threatening).
    • Allergic Reactions:
      • Symptoms: Swelling, difficulty breathing, or hives.

Precautions:

  1. Medical Conditions:

    • Inform your doctor if you have:
      • Liver disease (increased risk of toxicity).
      • Kidney disease (dosage adjustment may be required).
      • Heart conditions (especially arrhythmias or QT prolongation).
  2. Drug Interactions:

    • Avoid combining with drugs that also prolong QT interval (e.g., erythromycin, quinidine).
    • Be cautious when using with warfarin (increased bleeding risk), phenytoin, or rifampin (can alter effectiveness).
