Used For:

  1. Respiratory Tract Infections:
    • Community-acquired pneumonia
    • Acute bacterial sinusitis
    • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  2. Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Effective in treating complicated skin infections, such as abscesses and cellulitis.
  3. Intra-abdominal Infections: Used in treating complicated abdominal infections, including peritonitis.
  4. Bacterial Conjunctivitis: Moxifloxacin is also available in an ophthalmic form (eye drops) to treat bacterial conjunctivitis, but the tablet form is mainly for systemic infections.
  5. Other Complicated Infections: Occasionally used for urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other bacterial infections resistant to standard antibiotics.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  1. Nausea or Vomiting
  2. Diarrhea
  3. Headache
  4. Dizziness
  5. Stomach Pain

Serious but less common side effects:

  1. Tendon Rupture or Tendonitis: Especially in older adults or those on corticosteroids.
  2. Peripheral Neuropathy: Numbness, tingling, or burning sensation in the extremities.
  3. QT Prolongation: Irregular heart rhythms, which can lead to serious heart problems.
  4. Allergic Reactions: Swelling, rash, or difficulty breathing.
  5. Liver Toxicity: Can cause abnormal liver function tests or, rarely, serious liver injury.

Precautions:

  1. Tendon Problems: There is an increased risk of tendon rupture, particularly in older adults and those on corticosteroids.
  2. Heart Conditions: Use cautiously in patients with heart rhythm disorders (e.g., QT prolongation).
  3. Liver Function: Should be used cautiously in patients with liver disease, and regular liver function monitoring may be necessary.
  4. Avoid Sun Exposure: Moxifloxacin may increase sensitivity to sunlight; prolonged exposure should be avoided to prevent sunburn.
  5. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor before use, as the safety of Moxifloxacin during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not well established.
