Used For:

Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections: Such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia.
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs): Including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
  • Ear infections: Otitis media.
  • Gonorrhea: Uncomplicated infections caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
  • Typhoid fever: Caused by Salmonella typhi.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Side Effects:

  • Common:

    • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
    • Stomach pain or discomfort.
    • Headache or dizziness.

  • Less Common:

    • Rash or itching (allergic reaction).
    • Vaginal yeast infections.
    • Elevated liver enzymes (detected via blood tests).

  • Rare but Serious:

    • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., swelling, difficulty breathing).
    • Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea (severe, persistent diarrhea).
