- Drowsiness and Fatigue: Metoclopramide may cause sleepiness, so it is important to avoid activities that require mental alertness until you know how the medication affects you.
- Restlessness (Akathisia): Some patients may experience a feeling of inner restlessness or difficulty sitting still.
- Dizziness or Headache: These are mild side effects that can occur.
- Diarrhea: The medication stimulates the movement of the digestive system, which may result in diarrhea.
- Muscle Tremors or Twitching: Rarely, involuntary movements may occur, especially with prolonged use (called tardive dyskinesia).
Precautions
Before using Maxolon Syrup, consider the following precautions:
- Tardive Dyskinesia: Long-term or high-dose use of metoclopramide can cause a movement disorder called tardive dyskinesia, characterized by involuntary movements of the face or limbs. This risk is higher in elderly patients, particularly women.
- Neurological Disorders: Patients with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders should use metoclopramide cautiously as it may worsen symptoms.
- Depression or Mental Health Issues: Metoclopramide may worsen depression or cause suicidal thoughts in certain individuals. Notify your doctor if you have a history of depression or other mental health conditions.
- Kidney or Liver Disease: Adjustments in dosage may be required for patients with kidney or liver issues, as metoclopramide is processed through these organs.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Metoclopramide is considered safe during pregnancy to manage nausea, but it should only be used under the supervision of a healthcare provider. Since it can pass into breast milk, consult your doctor before using it while breastfeeding.
