Used For:

  • Treatment-resistant schizophrenia

  • Reducing suicidal behavior in schizophrenic or schizoaffective patients

  • Sometimes used in bipolar disorder (off-label)

Side Effects:

  • Drowsiness, dizziness

  • Weight gain

  • Constipation

  • Drooling (hypersalivation)

  • Agranulocytosis (low white blood cell count – requires regular blood monitoring)

Precautions:

  • Requires frequent blood tests (WBC/ANC count)

  • Avoid in patients with history of seizures or heart problems

  • Monitor for signs of infection (fever, sore throat)
