Manufactured By: Novo Nordisk

Used For:

Levemir FlexPen contains insulin detemir, a long-acting insulin used to:

  • Manage Blood Sugar Levels in Diabetes: Used for the treatment of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes to help control blood glucose levels.
  • Basal Insulin: Provides a steady level of insulin throughout the day and night to manage blood sugar levels between meals and during sleep.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of Levemir FlexPen may include:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), which can cause symptoms like shakiness, sweating, dizziness, confusion, and headache
  • Injection site reactions (e.g., redness, swelling, itching)
  • Weight gain
  • Lipodystrophy (changes in fat tissue at the injection site)

Less common but more serious side effects may include:

  • Severe hypoglycemia, which can lead to seizures, unconsciousness, or even death if not treated promptly
  • Allergic reactions, including rash, itching, or swelling, particularly of the face, tongue, or throat, which can cause difficulty breathing
  • Potassium level changes (hypokalemia), which may affect heart function

Precautions:

  • Hypoglycemia Risk: Monitor blood glucose levels regularly, and be aware of the symptoms of hypoglycemia. Carry a source of fast-acting sugar, such as glucose tablets, in case of low blood sugar.
  • Injection Technique: Rotate injection sites to avoid lipodystrophy. Do not inject into areas that are sore, swollen, or bruised.
  • Dosage Adjustments: Insulin requirements may change during times of illness, stress, or changes in diet or exercise. Consult your healthcare provider if you need to adjust your dose.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Insulin detemir is considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but insulin needs may change during pregnancy, so close monitoring is necessary.
  • Drug Interactions: Inform your healthcare provider of all medications, supplements, and over-the-counter products you are taking, as some medications can affect blood glucose levels or interact with insulin.
