Manufactured By: Convell Laboratories

Used For:

  • Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat GERD, a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing irritation and heartburn.
  • Peptic Ulcers: Used to treat gastric ulcers and duodenal ulcers, promoting healing and reducing stomach acid.
  • Helicobacter pylori Infection: Often combined with antibiotics to eradicate H. pylori infection, which is a common cause of ulcers.
  • Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A rare condition where the stomach produces too much acid; Lansoprazole reduces acid secretion.
  • Erosive Esophagitis: Inflammation and damage to the esophagus caused by acid reflux, treated by reducing stomach acid.

Side Effects:

  • Common:
    • Headache or dizziness.
    • Nausea, diarrhea, or constipation.
    • Stomach pain or flatulence.
  • Serious:
    • Vitamin B12 deficiency: Long-term use of Lansoprazole can interfere with vitamin B12 absorption.
    • Kidney issues: Prolonged use may increase the risk of acute interstitial nephritis or kidney disease.
    • Bone fractures: Long-term use of PPIs can increase the risk of bone fractures, particularly in older adults.
    • Clostridium difficile infection: Long-term use may increase the risk of C. difficile infection in the colon, leading to severe diarrhea.
    • Liver issues: Rare cases of liver problems, such as liver inflammation or elevated liver enzymes.

Precautions:

  • Long-term Use: Should be used with caution and under medical supervision for long periods due to potential risks like nutrient deficiencies (e.g., magnesium, calcium) and bone fractures.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Lansoprazole is generally considered safe during pregnancy for short-term use, but consult a healthcare provider before use, especially in high doses. It is also present in breast milk, so use with caution if breastfeeding.
  • Liver Disease: Dose adjustments may be necessary for people with liver disease.
  • Kidney Disease: People with kidney problems should be monitored during treatment.
  • Drug Interactions: Lansoprazole may interact with medications such as warfarin, digoxin, antiretrovirals, and iron supplements. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're taking.
