Used For:

• Serious bacterial infections, especially drug-resistant ones, including:
  • Pneumonia (hospital-acquired & community-acquired)
  • Skin & soft tissue infections (MRSA-related)
  • Bloodstream infections
  • Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) – Used in drug-resistant TB cases (off-label)
  • Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE) infections

Side Effects:

• Common Side Effects:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Dizziness

• Serious Side Effects (Long-term use or high doses):

  • Bone marrow suppression (low platelets, anemia) – Risk increases with use >2 weeks
  • Peripheral neuropathy (tingling, numbness in hands/feet)
  • Optic neuropathy (vision problems, rare but serious)
  • Serotonin syndrome – If taken with SSRIs, antidepressants, or certain painkillers

Precautions:

• Avoid Tyramine-rich foods (cheese, alcohol, fermented foods) – May cause high blood pressure crisis.
• Monitor Blood Counts – Especially in long-term use (>14 days).
• Use with Caution in Diabetes – May cause low blood sugar.
