Used For:
Pancrelipase is a combination of enzymes (lipase, amylase, and protease) used to aid in the digestion of food. It is primarily used in people with pancreatic insufficiency, a condition where the pancreas does not produce enough digestive enzymes. It helps break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in the digestive system. Conditions commonly treated with pancrelipase include:
- Cystic fibrosis: A genetic disorder that affects the lungs and pancreas, leading to thick mucus that impairs enzyme secretion.
- Chronic pancreatitis: Long-term inflammation of the pancreas that affects its ability to produce digestive enzymes.
- Pancreatic cancer or pancreatic surgery: When parts of the pancreas are removed or damaged, reducing enzyme production.
- Other forms of pancreatic insufficiency due to various diseases or surgical procedures.
Side Effects:
Common side effects of pancrelipase include:
- Abdominal discomfort or bloating
- Flatulence (gas)
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Stomach cramps
Less common but more serious side effects may include:
- Severe abdominal pain or tenderness
- Weight loss or difficulty gaining weight
- Rectal bleeding or unusual stool
- Skin rash or signs of allergic reactions
- Elevated uric acid levels (which could lead to gout-like symptoms)
- Fibrosing colonopathy (a rare but serious condition causing bowel damage)
Precautions:
- Allergy to pork products: Pancrelipase is often derived from pig pancreases. If you are allergic to pork, consult your doctor for alternative treatments.
- History of pancreatitis: Patients with a history of pancreatitis should be closely monitored, as pancrelipase could potentially cause flare-ups.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Pancrelipase should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if clearly needed. Consult your doctor for proper evaluation of the risks and benefits.
- Other medical conditions: Inform your healthcare provider if you have any kidney or liver conditions, as pancrelipase may affect these organs.
- Drug interactions: Pancrelipase may interact with certain medications, such as antacids or drugs that affect digestion. Always inform your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking.
- High-dose use: Long-term or high-dose use of pancrelipase can cause digestive issues, such as fibrosing colonopathy, especially in children with cystic fibrosis. Monitoring and dosage adjustments may be necessary.
