Used For:

Lansoprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces the production of stomach acid. It is commonly used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid and to promote healing of the digestive tract. Some of its primary uses include:

  1. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Lansoprazole is used to treat GERD, a condition where stomach acid frequently flows back into the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and irritation of the esophagus.

  2. Peptic Ulcers:

    • Gastric ulcers: Lansoprazole is used to treat ulcers in the stomach, including those caused by H. pylori (a bacterium that can infect the stomach lining) or NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) which can cause ulcer formation.
    • Duodenal ulcers: It is also used to treat ulcers in the first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
  3. Helicobacter pylori Eradication: Lansoprazole is sometimes used in combination with antibiotics (like amoxicillin or clarithromycin) to help eradicate H. pylori infection, which is a common cause of ulcers.

  4. Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A rare condition where tumors in the pancreas or duodenum cause excessive acid production. Lansoprazole helps reduce acid secretion in this condition.

  5. Prevention of Ulcers: Lansoprazole is sometimes used to prevent NSAID-induced ulcers in people who need to take NSAIDs long-term.

Side Effects:

Lansoprazole is generally well-tolerated, but like all medications, it can cause side effects. The most common side effects include:

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Headache
    • Diarrhea or constipation
    • Abdominal pain or discomfort
    • Nausea
    • Flatulence (gas)
    • Dizziness
  • Serious Side Effects (Less common but can occur):

    • Allergic reactions: Severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing) can occur, though they are rare.
    • Bone fractures: Long-term use of PPIs like lansoprazole has been associated with an increased risk of bone fractures, particularly in the hip, wrist, and spine. This is due to reduced calcium absorption.
    • Low magnesium levels: Prolonged use of lansoprazole can lead to low magnesium levels, which may cause symptoms like muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
    • Vitamin B12 deficiency: Long-term use of PPIs can reduce the absorption of vitamin B12, leading to deficiency over time, which may result in symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and nerve problems (e.g., numbness or tingling in the hands or feet).
    • Clostridium difficile infection: Long-term use of PPIs may increase the risk of a Clostridium difficile infection in the colon, leading to severe diarrhea.
    • Kidney problems: There have been reports of acute interstitial nephritis (inflammation of the kidneys) and long-term kidney disease in patients using PPIs for extended periods.

Precautions:

Before using lansoprazole, it's important to discuss your medical history with your healthcare provider, especially if you have:

  • Allergic reactions: If you are allergic to lansoprazole, other PPIs, or any ingredients in the medication, you should not take it.
  • Liver disease: Lansoprazole is metabolized in the liver, so people with liver problems may need a lower dose or closer monitoring.
  • Kidney disease: Although not common, PPIs like lansoprazole have been associated with kidney issues. If you have a history of kidney disease, use with caution.
  • Osteoporosis: People at risk for osteoporosis (bone thinning) should be monitored if using lansoprazole long-term, as it may reduce calcium absorption and contribute to bone fractures.
  • Low magnesium levels: If you have a history of low magnesium levels, your doctor may need to monitor you while you're on lansoprazole, as the medication can lower magnesium levels with prolonged use.
