Used For:

• Type 2 Diabetes Management – Helps lower blood sugar when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
• Can be used alone or in combination with other antidiabetic drugs (e.g., Metformin, SGLT2 inhibitors, Sulfonylureas).
• Helps prevent complications of diabetes, such as kidney and heart disease, when used consistently.

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Headache
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Mild stomach pain or diarrhea
  • Nasal congestion, sore throat

• Serious (Less Common):

  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) – Symptoms: Severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – More likely if taken with insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Joint pain or muscle weakness
  • Allergic reactions – Rash, swelling, breathing difficulty
  • Liver problems (rare) – Symptoms: Dark urine, yellowing of skin/eyes

Precautions:

• Not for Type 1 Diabetes or Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA).
• Monitor kidney function, as Sitagliptin is eliminated through the kidneys.
• Use with caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis.
• May need dose adjustment in kidney disease (eGFR <45 mL/min).
• Avoid excessive alcohol intake, as it increases the risk of pancreatitis.
