Used For:

  • Bacterial Infections: Moxifloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections, including:
    • Respiratory tract infections: Pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
    • Skin and soft tissue infections.
    • Intra-abdominal infections.
    • Eye infections (in its ophthalmic form).
  • Tuberculosis (TB): May be used as part of combination therapy for drug-resistant tuberculosis.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, and headache.
  • Serious: Tendon inflammation or rupture, peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage), QT interval prolongation (can cause abnormal heart rhythms), and allergic reactions.
  • Other: Rarely, psychiatric side effects (e.g., anxiety, confusion) and liver enzyme changes.

Precautions:

  • Tendon Issues: Avoid in individuals with a history of tendon disorders, especially in older adults or those on corticosteroids.
  • Heart Conditions: Use cautiously in patients with a history of QT prolongation or other heart rhythm disorders.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Not recommended unless clearly needed; consult a doctor before use.
  • Sun Sensitivity: Moxifloxacin may increase sensitivity to sunlight; avoid excessive sun exposure and use sunscreen.
  • Drug Interactions: Can interact with antacids, iron, and zinc supplements, reducing its effectiveness. Take these products at least 4 hours before or after moxifloxacin.
