Used For:

• Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM)
• Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) – When oral medications are not enough
• Gestational Diabetes (if prescribed by a doctor)

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – Sweating, shakiness, hunger, dizziness
  • Injection site reactions (redness, swelling, itching)
  • Mild weight gain

• Serious (Less Common):

  • Severe hypoglycemia – May cause fainting or seizures
  • Allergic reactions – Rash, swelling, difficulty breathing
  • Lipodystrophy (skin changes at injection site)
  • Low potassium (hypokalemia) – Symptoms: Weakness, irregular heartbeat

Precautions:

• Monitor blood sugar levels regularly to avoid highs or lows.
• Take as prescribed – Usually once or twice daily, 30–60 minutes before meals.
• Rotate injection sites to prevent skin problems.
• Adjust dose if sick, stressed, or changing diet/exercise.
• Avoid alcohol, as it increases the risk of hypoglycemia.
• Not for emergency treatment of low blood sugar or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
