Side Effects:

While generally well-tolerated, Ceftriaxone may cause some side effects, including:

Common Side Effects:

  1. Injection site reactions: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
  2. Diarrhea: A common antibiotic-related side effect.
  3. Nausea or vomiting
  4. Rash or mild skin reactions
  5. Headache or dizziness

Serious Side Effects (Less common):

  1. Allergic reactions: Hives, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), difficulty breathing (anaphylaxis).
  2. Clostridium difficile infection (C. diff): Prolonged antibiotic use can sometimes disrupt gut flora, leading to severe diarrhea caused by C. diff infection.
  3. Kidney or gallbladder issues: In rare cases, Ceftriaxone may cause kidney stones or biliary sludging (the buildup of bile components in the gallbladder).
  4. Severe skin reactions: Such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (very rare).
  5. Blood disorders: Prolonged use may lead to a reduction in certain blood cells, such as white blood cells (leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).

Precautions:

  1. Allergies:

    • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporins or penicillins, as cross-sensitivity reactions can occur.
  2. Kidney and liver function:

    • Ceftriaxone is excreted by the kidneys and partially by the liver, so individuals with impaired kidney or liver function should be monitored carefully.
  3. Biliary issues:

    • Use caution in patients with pre-existing gallbladder disease or those prone to gallbladder sludge or stones.
  4. Pregnancy and breastfeeding:

    • Ceftriaxone is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but it should be used under medical supervision. It can pass into breast milk, so use caution if breastfeeding.
  5. Concurrent use with calcium-containing IV solutions:

    • Ceftriaxone should not be mixed or administered at the same time as calcium-containing solutions in neonates due to the risk of lung or kidney damage.
  6. Prolonged use:

    • As with any antibiotic, prolonged or repeated use can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be initiated.
