Common Side Effects:
- Injection site reactions: Pain, redness, or swelling at the injection site.
- Diarrhea: A common antibiotic-related side effect.
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rash or mild skin reactions
- Headache or dizziness
Serious Side Effects (Less common):
- Allergic reactions: Hives, itching, swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), difficulty breathing (anaphylaxis).
- Clostridium difficile infection (C. diff): Prolonged antibiotic use can sometimes disrupt gut flora, leading to severe diarrhea caused by C. diff infection.
- Kidney or gallbladder issues: In rare cases, Ceftriaxone may cause kidney stones or biliary sludging (the buildup of bile components in the gallbladder).
- Severe skin reactions: Such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome (very rare).
- Blood disorders: Prolonged use may lead to a reduction in certain blood cells, such as white blood cells (leukopenia) or platelets (thrombocytopenia).
Precautions:
-
Allergies:
- Inform your doctor if you are allergic to cephalosporins or penicillins, as cross-sensitivity reactions can occur.
-
Kidney and liver function:
- Ceftriaxone is excreted by the kidneys and partially by the liver, so individuals with impaired kidney or liver function should be monitored carefully.
-
Biliary issues:
- Use caution in patients with pre-existing gallbladder disease or those prone to gallbladder sludge or stones.
-
Pregnancy and breastfeeding:
- Ceftriaxone is generally considered safe during pregnancy, but it should be used under medical supervision. It can pass into breast milk, so use caution if breastfeeding.
-
Concurrent use with calcium-containing IV solutions:
- Ceftriaxone should not be mixed or administered at the same time as calcium-containing solutions in neonates due to the risk of lung or kidney damage.
-
Prolonged use:
- As with any antibiotic, prolonged or repeated use can lead to the overgrowth of non-susceptible organisms, such as fungi. If superinfection occurs, appropriate therapy should be initiated.
