Used For:

• Type 2 Diabetes Management – Lowers blood sugar levels when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.
• Heart Failure (HFrEF – Reduced Ejection Fraction) – Reduces the risk of hospitalization and cardiovascular death.
• Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) – Slows kidney disease progression and reduces the risk of dialysis.

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Increased urination
  • Genital yeast infections (more common in women)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Mild dehydration
  • Low blood pressure (dizziness, fainting)

• Serious (Less Common):

  • Ketoacidosis (rare but serious) – Symptoms: Nausea, vomiting, difficulty breathing, extreme fatigue
  • Severe UTIs or kidney infections
  • Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) – More likely if combined with insulin or sulfonylureas
  • Fournier’s Gangrene (rare but life-threatening infection in the genital area)

Precautions:

• Not for Type 1 Diabetes or Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
• Stay hydrated to prevent dehydration and kidney problems
• Monitor for infections (UTIs, genital infections)
• Not recommended for patients with severe kidney disease (eGFR <30 mL/min)
• Avoid excessive alcohol intake to prevent ketoacidosis
