Used For:

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid. It is commonly prescribed for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition causing excessive stomach acid production), and to prevent stomach ulcers caused by long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It works by reducing the production of stomach acid.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include headache, diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, and flatulence. Long-term use may increase the risk of bone fractures, kidney disease, and low magnesium levels. Some people may experience dizziness, fatigue, or skin rashes.

Precautions:

• People with a history of liver disease should use esomeprazole with caution, as it can affect liver function.
• Prolonged use (especially over a year) may increase the risk of certain infections (e.g., Clostridium difficile) and nutrient deficiencies, such as vitamin B12 and magnesium.
• It can interact with medications like certain blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) and other PPIs, so inform your doctor of all the medications you are taking.
