Used For:

  • Treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers
  • Management of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Healing of erosive esophagitis
  • Treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome (a condition causing excessive stomach acid)
  • Prevention of ulcers in patients using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Flatulence
  • Rarely, long-term use may lead to:
    • Vitamin B12 deficiency
    • Low magnesium levels
    • Bone fractures

Precautions:

  • Should not be used for long-term treatment unless prescribed by a doctor.
  • Use cautiously in patients with liver impairment.
  • May interact with other medications, such as clopidogrel or warfarin.
  • Seek medical attention if severe side effects occur, such as persistent diarrhea (could indicate Clostridioides difficile infection).
