Used For:

  • Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Helps control blood sugar levels. Sitagliptin enhances insulin release and lowers blood glucose after meals, while metformin improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production in the liver. The extended-release form of metformin allows for gradual absorption, which can reduce gastrointestinal side effects.

Side Effects:

  • Common:
    • Gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea, abdominal discomfort) due to metformin
    • Upper respiratory tract infections (due to sitagliptin)
    • Headache
  • Less Common:
    • Lactic acidosis (rare but serious; associated with metformin, especially in those with kidney impairment)
