Used For:

  1. Inflammatory Conditions:

    • Treats conditions like arthritis, bursitis, and tendinitis by reducing inflammation and relieving pain.
  2. Allergic Reactions:

    • Used for severe allergic reactions, including skin conditions (e.g., eczema, dermatitis) and reactions to insect stings or bites.
  3. Autoimmune Diseases:

    • Helps manage autoimmune conditions such as lupus or multiple sclerosis by suppressing the immune system.
  4. Adrenal Insufficiency:

    • Used in individuals with Addison’s disease or other forms of adrenal insufficiency to replace the corticosteroid hormone that the body cannot produce adequately.
  5. Inflammatory Skin Disorders:

    • Used in topical forms (creams or ointments) to treat skin inflammation, rashes, or itching.

Side Effects:

Common:

  • Weight gain
  • Fluid retention (swelling in hands, ankles, or feet)
  • Increased appetite
  • Insomnia
  • Stomach upset or ulcers (in long-term use)
  • Acne or skin thinning (especially with topical use)

Serious:

  • Osteoporosis:
Long-term use can weaken bones, leading to fractures.

  • Hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar): Increases the risk of developing or worsening diabetes.

  • Gastrointestinal Bleeding:
Especially when used with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen.

  • Suppressed Immune System: Increases the risk of infections, as it suppresses immune function.

  • Cushing's Syndrome:
Symptoms may include facial rounding (moon face), increased body fat, and high blood pressure.

  • Adrenal Suppression:
The body may become dependent on hydrocortisone for cortisol production, leading to adrenal insufficiency when the drug is discontinued abruptly.

Precautions:

  1. Long-Term Use:

    • Prolonged use of hydrocortisone should be closely monitored to prevent serious side effects like osteoporosis, diabetes, and adrenal suppression.
  2. Infections:

    • Use with caution in individuals with active infections as it can mask symptoms of infections or worsen them.
  3. Sudden Discontinuation:

    • Do not stop hydrocortisone abruptly, especially after long-term use, as it can lead to adrenal insufficiency. Gradual tapering under medical supervision is necessary.
  4. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

    • Hydrocortisone is considered safe during pregnancy when prescribed by a doctor, but it should be used with caution. It can pass into breast milk, so discuss with a doctor if breastfeeding.
  5. Diabetes:

    • Hydrocortisone can raise blood sugar levels, requiring closer monitoring of blood glucose in diabetic patients.
  6. Heart Conditions:

    • Caution is needed for individuals with heart problems, as hydrocortisone can increase blood pressure and cause fluid retention.
  7. Peptic Ulcers:

    • Long-term use can increase the risk of developing stomach ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.
  8. Children:

    • Hydrocortisone use in children requires close monitoring, as it can affect growth and development with long-term use.
