Used For:

1. Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC):
   • Specifically effective in patients with tumors that have EGFR mutations.

Side Effects:

1. Common:

   • Skin rash or acne-like eruptions.
   • Diarrhea.
   • Nausea or vomiting.
   • Fatigue or weakness.
   • Dry skin or itching.

2. Serious:

   • Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD): Symptoms include shortness of breath, cough, or fever (potentially life-threatening).
   • Liver toxicity: Elevated liver enzymes; monitor liver function regularly.
   • Severe diarrhea leading to dehydration.
   • Gastrointestinal perforation (rare but serious).

Precautions:

1. Genetic Testing:

   • Gefitinib is effective only in patients whose tumors harbor specific EGFR mutations. Testing is required before starting therapy.

   • Regular liver function tests and assessment of lung function are essential.
   • Monitor for signs of dehydration due to diarrhea.
