Used For:

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Including complicated and uncomplicated UTIs.
  • Bacterial Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland caused by bacterial infection.
  • Acute uncomplicated pyelonephritis: Infection of the kidney.
  • Skin and soft tissue infections: Caused by certain bacteria.
  • Bone and joint infections: Such as osteomyelitis.
  • Infectious diarrhea: Caused by bacteria like E. coli and Shigella.
  • Respiratory tract infections: Such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness
  • Headache
  • Rash or itching
  • Stomach pain

More serious side effects (less common):

  • Tendon rupture or inflammation: Especially in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.
  • Peripheral neuropathy: Nerve damage, causing tingling or numbness.
  • Seizures: Rare, but possible in people with certain risk factors.
  • Severe allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, throat, or difficulty breathing (rare).
  • C. difficile infection: Risk of severe diarrhea due to a bacterial overgrowth in the intestines.

Precautions:

  • Tendonitis/Tendon rupture: Ciprofloxacin may increase the risk of tendonitis and tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those on corticosteroids.
  • Allergic reactions: Inform your doctor if you're allergic to ciprofloxacin, other quinolones, or any other medications.
  • Heart conditions: Use with caution if you have a history of QT prolongation (a heart rhythm disorder).
  • Kidney or liver impairment: Dose adjustments may be necessary in those with kidney or liver issues.
  • Sun sensitivity: Ciprofloxacin may increase your skin’s sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid prolonged sun exposure or tanning beds.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Not typically recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding, consult your doctor.
