Used For:

1. Hypoglycemia:

   • Treats low blood sugar caused by excessive insulin production (hyperinsulinism).
   • Conditions include insulinoma, islet cell tumors, or idiopathic hypoglycemia in infants and children.

2. Hypertensive Emergencies (Off-Label):

   • Occasionally used to manage acute, severe hypertension by relaxing vascular smooth muscle and reducing blood pressure.

Side Effects:

Common:

• Fluid retention and swelling (edema)
• Increased blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia)
• Nausea, vomiting, or abdominal pain
• Weakness or fatigue
• Dizziness

Serious:

• Heart complications, including congestive heart failure (due to fluid retention)
• Pulmonary edema
• Hypotension (low blood pressure)
• Skin rash or allergic reactions
• Hyperuricemia (high uric acid levels), which may lead to gout
• Leukopenia or thrombocytopenia (reduced white blood cells or platelets, rare)

Precautions:

1. Monitoring:

   • Blood glucose and electrolyte levels should be closely monitored, especially at the start of treatment.

2. Heart and Kidney Conditions:

   • Use with caution in patients with heart failure, fluid overload, or impaired kidney function due to the risk of edema and sodium retention.

3. Pregnancy and Breastfeeding:

   • Diazoxide crosses the placenta and should only be used in pregnancy if clearly necessary. Breastfeeding while on Diazoxide is not recommended.

4. Children:

   • Dosage adjustments are essential for pediatric use, as children are more sensitive to the drug's effects.
