Product Description
Product Name: Empagen-M XR Tablet 10/1000mg
Product Form: Tablets
Pack Size: 14's
Manufactured By: Ferozsons Laboratories
Used For:
Empagen-M XR is a combination of Empagliflozin (10mg) and Metformin Extended Release (XR) (1000mg). This medication is used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus by:
- Empagliflozin: A sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that helps lower blood sugar by removing excess glucose through urine.
- Metformin (XR): A biguanide that reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity. The extended-release formulation allows for gradual absorption, which helps reduce gastrointestinal side effects.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Gastrointestinal discomfort (nausea, diarrhea, stomach pain) from metformin
- Increased urination
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Hypoglycemia (especially when used with insulin or other diabetes medications)
- Headache
- Weakness or tiredness
- Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect of metformin)
- Increased thirst
Precautions:
- Kidney function: Not recommended for patients with severe kidney impairment. Regular monitoring of kidney function is necessary.
- Heart conditions: Consult your doctor if you have a history of heart problems.
- Hydration: It’s important to stay hydrated to avoid dehydration, as the medication increases urination.
- Lactic acidosis risk: Metformin can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, which requires immediate medical attention. The risk is higher in people with kidney or liver problems, those who consume excessive alcohol, or those undergoing surgery.
- Liver disease: Caution should be taken in individuals with liver issues.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult a healthcare professional if you are pregnant or breastfeeding before using this medication.
- Alcohol: Excessive alcohol use should be avoided as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis with metformin.
