Elzanor 12.5/500mg Tablet is a combination medication used to manage Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus. It contains two active ingredients:
- Dapagliflozin (12.5 mg): An SGLT2 inhibitor that works by preventing glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to increased glucose excretion in urine, thereby lowering blood sugar levels.
- Metformin (500 mg): A biguanide that helps reduce the amount of glucose produced by the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, which allows better glucose uptake by the body.
This combination helps control high blood sugar, reduces the risk of diabetes-related complications, and may promote weight loss in some individuals.
Side Effects:
- Common: Nausea, diarrhea, and upset stomach (from metformin)
- Hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) when combined with other diabetes medications
- Increased urination
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Dizziness
- Dehydration (due to increased urination)
- Rare but serious: Lactic acidosis (from metformin), a life-threatening condition
Precautions:
- Kidney/Liver Issues: Consult your healthcare provider before use if you have kidney or liver problems, as these organs are involved in processing the medication.
- Hydration: Stay hydrated, as the medication can increase urination and may cause dehydration.
- Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or breastfeeding.
- Lactic Acidosis Risk: Metformin may cause a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience unusual symptoms such as muscle pain, trouble breathing, extreme tiredness, or stomach discomfort.
- Hypoglycemia: Monitor your blood sugar levels regularly, especially if you're taking other diabetes medications, to avoid low blood sugar.
Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider are recommended to ensure the medication is effectively controlling your blood sugar.
