Used For:

  • Hyperprolactinemia: Treatment of disorders associated with high levels of prolactin hormone, such as prolactinomas (prolactin-secreting tumors), idiopathic hyperprolactinemia, and conditions that cause galactorrhea (excessive or inappropriate production of milk).
  • Parkinson’s Disease: Occasionally used off-label for Parkinson’s due to its dopamine agonist properties.

Side Effects:

  • Nausea and Vomiting: Common gastrointestinal side effects.
  • Dizziness and Headache: Due to its action on dopamine receptors.
  • Fatigue: Patients may feel unusually tired.
  • Abdominal Pain and Constipation: Digestive system-related side effects.
  • Hypotension: A drop in blood pressure, especially upon standing (orthostatic hypotension).
  • Sleep Disturbances: Including insomnia or excessive sleepiness.
  • Psychiatric Effects: Hallucinations, confusion, or mood swings in some cases.
  • Edema: Swelling due to fluid retention.

Precautions:

  • Cardiac Valvulopathy: Regular monitoring of heart valves is recommended as the drug can cause changes in heart valve function.
  • Fibrotic Complications: Patients should be screened for signs of pulmonary, pericardial, or retroperitoneal fibrosis.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and should be avoided during breastfeeding.
  • Liver and Kidney Function: Regular monitoring may be required in patients with liver or kidney issues.
  • Dopamine Agonist Withdrawal Syndrome: Gradual dose reduction is advised to avoid withdrawal symptoms.
