Precautions:
- Infections: Corticosteroids can suppress the immune system, increasing susceptibility to infections. Monitor for signs of infection and consult your healthcare provider if symptoms arise.
- Blood Sugar Levels: Dexamethasone can increase blood sugar levels. Monitor blood glucose levels regularly if you have diabetes or are at risk of diabetes.
- Bone Health: Long-term use of corticosteroids can lead to bone thinning. Ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake and discuss preventive measures with your healthcare provider.
- Mood and Behavior: Be aware of potential mood changes or behavioral symptoms, especially with long-term use. Report any severe or persistent symptoms to your healthcare provider.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Corticosteroids can increase the risk of gastrointestinal bleeding or ulcers. Avoid taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) unless directed by your healthcare provider.
- Adrenal Function: Long-term use can suppress the adrenal glands. Avoid abrupt discontinuation; tapering the dose is usually necessary to prevent adrenal insufficiency.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Dexamethasone should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed and under medical supervision. It is excreted in breast milk, so consult your healthcare provider if breastfeeding.
- Drug Interactions: Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications and supplements you are taking, as dexamethasone can interact with various drugs, including other corticosteroids and medications affecting blood sugar levels.
