Used For

  • Fungal Infections: Terbinafine is effective in treating dermatophyte infections, which are caused by fungi that affect the skin, hair, and nails. Some of the common conditions it treats include:
    • Athlete's Foot (tinea pedis)
    • Ringworm (tinea corporis)
    • Jock Itch (tinea cruris)
    • Fungal Nail Infections (onychomycosis)
    • Fungal Nail Infections (tinea capitis)

Side Effects

  • Common:
    • Topical Use: Mild skin irritation, redness, itching, or burning at the site of application.
    • Oral Use: Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, diarrhea, or stomach pain; headaches.
  • Serious (though rare):
    • Liver Issues: Terbinafine can cause liver toxicity, leading to symptoms like jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine, or severe abdominal pain. Liver function tests are recommended during treatment, especially for prolonged use.
    • Allergic Reactions: Rash, swelling, or breathing difficulties (anaphylaxis, though rare).
    • Blood Disorders: Rarely, it can cause a decrease in white blood cell count or platelet count, which can increase the risk of infections or bleeding.
    • Taste Disturbances: Oral terbinafine has been known to cause taste disturbances, including a persistent loss of taste in some people, though this is usually reversible after discontinuation.

Precautions

  • Liver Health: Since terbinafine can affect liver function, it should be used with caution in individuals with existing liver problems, and liver function should be monitored during treatment, especially with oral use.
  • Pregnancy/Breastfeeding: Terbinafine is classified as a pregnancy category B drug (no evidence of risk in humans), but its use during pregnancy should be discussed with a healthcare provider. It is also excreted in breast milk, so breastfeeding while on terbinafine should be avoided unless recommended by a doctor.
  • Kidney Disease: People with kidney issues should use terbinafine with caution and under a doctor’s supervision, especially when using the oral form.
  • Drug Interactions: Terbinafine can interact with other medications, such as CYP450 enzyme inhibitors (e.g., rifampin, cimetidine), which may alter its metabolism.
