Used For:

Esomeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that reduces stomach acid production. It is used to treat conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, peptic ulcers, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Esomeprazole can also be prescribed to prevent stomach ulcers caused by NSAID use.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea or constipation
  • Abdominal pain
  • Dry mouth or gas

Less common but more serious side effects:

  • Low magnesium levels (with prolonged use)
  • Vitamin B12 deficiency
  • Bone fractures (especially with long-term use)
  • Increased risk of Clostridium difficile infection
