Product Description

Product Name: Co-Amstan Tablets 10+160+25mg

Product Form: Tablets

Pack Size: 28's

Manufactured By: Scilife Pharma

Used For:

This combination of medications is primarily used for the treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension). The individual components work in different ways to effectively lower blood pressure:

  1. Amlodipine: A calcium channel blocker that relaxes and widens blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood and reducing blood pressure.
  2. Hydrochlorothiazide: A thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps the kidneys remove excess salt and water from the body, reducing blood volume and lowering blood pressure.
  3. Valsartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that prevents the narrowing of blood vessels, helping them stay relaxed and lowering blood pressure.

This combination may also be used to treat conditions like heart failure, chronic kidney disease, or stroke prevention in certain high-risk patients, as it can reduce the strain on the heart and improve overall cardiovascular function.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of this combination can include:

  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly, due to lowered blood pressure)
  • Swelling in the ankles or feet (common with Amlodipine)
  • Frequent urination (due to the diuretic effect of Hydrochlorothiazide)
  • Fatigue or tiredness
  • Headache
  • Nausea or upset stomach

Serious side effects, though rare, may include:

  • Severe allergic reactions: Difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
  • Kidney problems: Reduced urine output, swelling in legs/feet, or abnormal kidney function tests.
  • High potassium levels (hyperkalemia): Muscle weakness, irregular heartbeats, or heart problems.
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension): Severe dizziness, fainting.
  • Liver problems: Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes), dark urine.
  • Severe dizziness or lightheadedness.

Precautions:

  • Kidney Function: This combination can affect kidney function. People with preexisting kidney problems should use this medication with caution, and kidney function should be regularly monitored.

  • Electrolyte Imbalances: Hydrochlorothiazide can lower potassium and sodium levels, while Valsartan can raise potassium levels. Electrolyte levels should be monitored regularly, especially during the first few weeks of treatment.

  • Pregnancy: This combination should not be used during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, due to risks to the developing fetus. Consult a healthcare provider if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

  • Breastfeeding: This combination is generally not recommended while breastfeeding. If you are breastfeeding, speak with your healthcare provider about alternatives.

  • Liver Disease: Use caution in people with liver disease, as Valsartan can affect liver function.

  • Diabetes: Both Valsartan and Hydrochlorothiazide can affect blood sugar levels. People with diabetes should monitor their blood sugar closely.

  • Dehydration: Make sure to maintain adequate hydration, as dehydration can lead to low blood pressure or kidney issues, especially with Hydrochlorothiazide.

  • Alcohol: Alcohol can amplify the blood-pressure-lowering effects of this combination, leading to an increased risk of dizziness or fainting. Limit alcohol intake while taking this medication.

  • Other Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you're taking, as there may be interactions with other drugs, such as potassium supplements, other blood pressure medications, or NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs).
