Used For:
Cefixime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting the formation of bacterial cell walls, ultimately killing the bacteria. Some common uses include:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis
- Ear infections (otitis media)
- Gonorrhea (a sexually transmitted infection)
- Throat infections, such as strep throat
- Typhoid fever
- Skin infections caused by susceptible bacteria
Cefixime is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Rash
- Fatigue
Serious side effects, though rare, can include:
- Severe allergic reactions (swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing)
- Severe diarrhea (possibly indicating Clostridium difficile infection)
- Liver problems, indicated by jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) or dark urine
- Kidney problems, which may cause reduced urine output or swelling in the legs/feet
- Blood disorders, such as low white blood cell count (leukopenia) or low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), which can increase the risk of infection or bleeding
Precautions:
- Allergic Reactions: If you have a history of allergies to penicillins or other cephalosporins, you may be at increased risk for an allergic reaction to cefixime. Always inform your doctor of any prior allergies.
- Renal function: Cefixime is excreted through the kidneys, so people with impaired kidney function may need a dose adjustment. Kidney function should be monitored during treatment.
- Gastrointestinal Issues: Cefixime can sometimes cause gastrointestinal disturbances, including diarrhea. If diarrhea becomes severe or contains blood, it’s important to contact a healthcare provider, as it could indicate a serious infection like Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Cefixime is generally considered safe during pregnancy but should be used only when necessary. It passes into breast milk in small amounts, so use during breastfeeding should be discussed with a healthcare provider.
- Drug Interactions: Cefixime can interact with other medications, particularly anticoagulants (blood thinners) like warfarin, which may increase the risk of bleeding. Always inform your healthcare provider about all other medications you're taking.
